. . . Hybrid Hummers
- As oil prices have escalated, more and more people
are taking hybrid vehicles seriously. Including the
military. UQM
Technologies
(Amex: UQM), a developer of alternative energy technologies
has received an order for additional UQM® permanent
magnet generators from DRS Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:
DRS) for use in technology demonstration hybrid electric
High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs).
A single 100 kW UQM® generator provides electric
power to both propel the hybrid electric HMMWV as well
as to meet on-board and stationary electric power requirements.
The hybrid electric HMMWVs are being developed by DRS
Technologies and incorporate DRS's energy management
electronic systems.
. . . New RFID Smartchips
- Viisage Technology (NasdaqNM) products now
have smartchips incorporating RFID (radio frequency
identification) capability to authenticate travel credentials.
The integration of RFID into Viisage's iA-thenticate
smartchip is expected to streamline border crossing
processes and the authentication of identity documents,
including both old and new passports, and improve identification
and security at border crossings. The Viisage iA-thenticate
system is currently deployed at many border crossings,
airports and embassies around the world.
. . . Protecting heads
of state and CEOs - View
Systems (OTCBB:VYST) provided SecureScans for
use at the recent Clinton Global Initiative in New York,
which gathered together 39 heads of state, 300 CEOs
and numerous scholars at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers.
Three SecureScans (Concealed Weapons Detection Systems)
screened individuals who sought access to the meeting
area. The technology provided user-friendly non-contact
imaging and hands-off scanning for weapons and potential
threat objects. Attendees commented on the technology's
sophistication and distinct difference from regular
magnetometers.

. . . Smallpox and
electrified bullets - MDM Group (MDDM.PK) said that
its Biodefense Division is finalizing agreements to
develop a novel vaccine for smallpox designed for safe
public immunization to counter bioterrorism. Currently
available smallpox vaccines use modified live vaccinia
virus that are time intensive in their application.
They are also not considered safe for use in certain
segments of the population, especially those with skin
diseases, immune disorders, HIV, and pregnant or lactating
mothers. Smallpox is a top priority on the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control bioterrorism threat list.
The company has also
developed ShockRounds, a form of electrified bullets.
This patent pending technology introduces an "electric"
charge to traditional ammunition and other projectiles
such as rubber bullets through the combination of existing
ballistic and piezoelectric technologies. The company
sees ShockRounds as a more flexible solution in dealing
with continued escalation of terrorism and civil unrest
on a global scale. MDM says that the innocent bystander
mistakenly killed in the attempted London bombing incident
may have survived if Shockrounds were used. And if he
had been a real terrorist, he could have been captured
alive for questioning.
